[texts]Electron g-Factor Anisotropy in Symmetric (110)-oriented GaAs Quantum Wells - J. Hübner
We demonstrate by spin quantum beat spectroscopy that in undoped symmetric (110)-oriented GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum wells even a symmetric spatial envelope wavefunction gives rise to an asymmetric in-plane electron Land\'e-g-factor. The anisotropy is neither a direct consequence of the asymmetric in-plane Dresselhaus splitting nor of the asymmetric Zeeman splitting of the hole bands but is a pure higher order effect that exists as well for diamond type lattices...

[texts]InAs-AlSb quantum wells in tilted magnetic fields - S. Brosig
InAs-AlSb quantum wells are investigated by transport experiments in magnetic fields tilted with respect to the sample normal. Using the coincidence method we find for magnetic fields up to 28 T that the spin splitting can be as large as 5 times the Landau splitting. We find a value of the g-factor of about 13. For small even-integer filling factors the corresponding minima in the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations cannot be tuned into maxima for arbitrary tilt angles...

[texts]Pattern formation of indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells - C. S. Liu
Using a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation including short-range two-body attraction and three-body repulsion, we investigate the spatial distribution of indirect excitons in semiconductor coupled quantum wells. The results obtained can interpret the experimental phenomenon that annular exciton cloud first contracts then expands when the number of confined excitons is increased in impurity potential well, as observed by Lai \emph{et al.} [Lai $et al.$, Science \textbf{303}, 503 (2004)]...

[texts]Band structure of semimagnetic Hg1-yMnyTe quantum wells - E. G. Novik
The band structure of semimagnetic Hg_1-yMn_yTe/Hg_1-xCd_xTe type-III quantum wells has been calculated using eight-band kp model in an envelope function approach. Details of the band structure calculations are given for the Mn free case (y=0). A mean field approach is used to take the influence of the sp-d exchange interaction on the band structure of QW's with low Mn concentrations into account. The calculated Landau level fan diagram and the density of states of a Hg_0.98Mn_0.02Te/Hg_0.3Cd_0....

[texts]Single valley Dirac fermions in zero-gap HgTe quantum wells - B. Büttner
Dirac fermions have been studied intensively in condensed matter physics in recent years. Many theoretical predictions critically depend on the number of valleys where the Dirac fermions are realized. In this work, we report the discovery of a two dimensional system with a single valley Dirac cone. We study the transport properties of HgTe quantum wells grown at the critical thickness separating between the topologically trivial and the quantum spin Hall phases...
[texts]Electron spin relaxation in $p$-type GaAs quantum wells - Y. Zhou
We investigate electron spin relaxation in $p$-type GaAs quantum wells from a fully microscopic kinetic spin Bloch equation approach, with all the relevant scatterings, such as the electron-impurity, electron-phonon, electron-electron Coulomb, electron-hole Coulomb and electron-hole exchange (the Bir-Aronov-Pikus mechanism) scatterings explicitly included. From this approach, we examine the relative importance of the D'yakonov-Perel' and Bir-Aronov-Pikus mechanisms in wide ranges of temperature,...

[texts]Room temperature electron spin coherence in telecom-wavelength quaternary quantum wells - W. H. Lau
Time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy is used to monitor the room temperature electron spin dynamics of optical telecommunication wavelength AlInGaAs multiple quantum wells lattice-matched to InP. We found that electron spin coherence times and effective g-factors vary as a function of aluminum concentration. The measured electron spin coherence times of these multiple quantum wells, with wavelengths ranging from 1.26 microns to 1.53 microns, reach approximately 100 ps at room temperature, an...

[texts]Backscattering of Dirac fermions in HgTe quantum wells with a finite gap - G. Tkachov
The density-dependent mobility of n-type HgTe quantum wells with inverted band ordering has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. While semiconductor heterostructures with a parabolic dispersion exhibit an increase in mobility with carrier density, high quality HgTe quantum wells exhibit a distinct mobility maximum. We show that this mobility anomaly is due to backscattering of Dirac fermions from random fluctuations of the band gap (Dirac mass)...

[texts]Theoretical modeling of spatial and temperature dependent exciton energy in coupled quantum wells - C. S. liu
Motivated by a recent experiment of spatial and temperature dependent average exciton energy distribution in coupled quantum wells [S. Yang \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{75}, 033311 (2007)], we investigate the nature of the interactions in indirect excitons. Based on the uncertainty principle, along with a temperature and energy dependent distribution which includes both population and recombination effects, we show that the interplay between an attractive two-body interaction and a repu...

[texts]Interplay between periodicity and nonlinearity of indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells - T. F. Xu
Inspired by a recent experiment of localization-delocalization transition (LDT) of indirect excitons in lateral electrostatic lattices [M. Remeika \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{102}, 186803 (2009)], we investigate the interplay between periodic potential and nonlinear interactions of indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells. It is shown that the model involving both attractive two-body and repulsive three-body interactions can lead to a natural account for the LDT of excitons acros...

[texts]Anisotropic Electron Spin Lifetime in (In,Ga)As/GaAs (110) Quantum Wells - L. Schreiber
Anisotropic electron spin lifetimes in strained undoped (In,Ga)As/GaAs (110) quantum wells of different width and height are investigated by time-resolved Faraday rotation and time-resolved transmission and are compared to the (001)-orientation. From the suppression of spin precession, the ratio of in-plane to out-of-plane spin lifetimes is calculated. Whereas the ratio increases with In concentration in agreement with theory, a surprisingly high anisotropy of 480 is observed for the broadest qu...
[texts]Fine structure of "zero-mode" Landau levels in HgTe/HgCdTe quantum wells - M. Orlita
HgTe/HgCdTe quantum wells with the inverted band structure have been probed using far infrared magneto-spectroscopy. Realistic calculations of Landau level diagrams have been performed to identify the observed transitions. Investigations have been greatly focused on the magnetic field dependence of the peculiar pair of "zero-mode" Landau levels which characteristically split from the upper conduction and bottom valence bands, and merge under the applied magnetic field...

[texts]Dark-bright magneto-exciton mixing induced by Coulomb interaction in strained quantum wells - Y. D. Jho
Coupled magneto-exciton states between allowed (`bright') and forbidden (`dark') transitions are found in absorption spectra of strained In$_{0.2}$Ga$_{0.8}$As/GaAs quantum wells with increasing magnetic field up to 30 T. We found large (~ 10 meV) energy splittings in the mixed states. The observed anticrossing behavior is independent of polarization, and sensitive only to the parity of the quantum confined states...
[texts]Time-Integrated Evidence for Superfluorescence from Dense Electron-Hole Magneto-Plasmas in Semiconductor Quantum Wells - Y. D. Jho
Cooperative spontaneous recombination (superfluorescence) of electron-hole plasmas in semiconductors has been a challenge to observe due to ultrafast decoherence. We argue that superfluorescence can be achieved in quantum-confined semiconductor systems and present experimental evidence for superfluorescence from high-density photoexcited electron-hole plasmas in quantum wells under high magnetic fields (> 20 T)...
[texts]Excitonic photoluminescence in symmetric coupled double quantum wells subject to an external electric field - J. Soubusta
The effect of an external electric field F on the excitonic photoluminescence (PL) spectra of a symmetric coupled double quantum well (DQW) is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. We show that the variational method in a two-particle electron-hole wave function approximation gives a good agreement with measurements of PL on a narrow DQW in a wide interval of F including flat-band regime...

[texts]Excitonic Photoluminescence in Semiconductor Quantum Wells: Plasma versus Excitons - S. Chatterjee
Time-resolved photoluminescence spectra after nonresonant excitation show a distinct 1s resonance, independent of the existence of bound excitons. A microscopic analysis identifies excitonic and electron-hole plasma contributions. For low temperatures and low densities the excitonic emission is extremely sensitive to even minute optically active exciton populations making it possible to extract a phase diagram for incoherent excitonic populations.

[texts]The onset of exciton absorption in modulation doped GaAs quantum wells - G. Yusa
We study the evolution of the absorption spectrum of a modulation doped GaAs/AlGaAs semiconductor quantum well with decreasing the carrier density. We find that there is a critical density which marks the transition from a Fermi edge singularity to a hydrogen-like behavior. At this density both the lineshape and the transitions energies of the excitons change. We study the density dependence of the singularity exponent $\alpha $ and show that disorder plays an important role in determining the e...

We observe a series of superfluorescent bursts, discrete both in time and energy, corresponding to the cooperative recombination of electron-hole pairs from different Landau levels. The emission energies are strongly renormalized due to many-body interactions among the photogenerated carriers, exhibiting red-shifts as large as 20 meV at 15 T...

[texts]Valley dependent many-body effects in 2D semiconductors - S. Das Sarma
We calculate the valley degeneracy ($g_v$) dependence of the many-body renormalization of quasiparticle properties in multivalley 2D semiconductor structures due to the Coulomb interaction between the carriers. Quite unexpectedly, the $g_v$ dependence of many-body effects is nontrivial and non-generic, and depends qualitatively on the specific Fermi liquid property under consideration. While the interacting 2D compressibility manifests monotonically increasing many-body renormalization with incr...

We compare the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in two coupled potential wells with atoms diffracting from a standing light wave. The corresponding Hamiltonians have an identical appearance, but with a different set of commutation rules. Well-known diffraction phenomena as Pendellosung oscillations between opposite momenta in the case of Bragg diffraction, and adiabatic transitions between momentum states are shown to have analogies in the two-well case...

Electronic structure calculations for layered zincblende semiconductors are described within a restricted basis formalism which naturally and non-perturbatively accomodates both crystalline inversion asymmetry and cubic anisotropy. These calculations are applied to calculate the electron spin decoherence times $T_1$ and $T_2$ due to precessional decoherence in quantum wells. Distinctly different dependences of spin coherence times on mobility, quantization energy, and temperature are found from ...

[texts]Resonances for coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates - H. L. Haroutyunyan
We study some effects arising from periodic modulation of the asymmetry and the barrier height of a two-well potential containing a Bose-Einstein condensate. At certain modulation frequencies the system exhibits resonances, which may lead to enhancement of the tunneling rate between the wells and which can be used to control the particle distribution among the wells. Some of the effects predicted for a two-well system can be carried over to the case of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical la...
